Troparion for the Resurrection in Tone 4:

Having learned the joyful message of the Resurrection from the angel, the women disciples of the Lord cast from them their parental condemnation and proudly broke the news to the disciples, saying death hath been spoiled, Christ God is risen, granting the world great mercy.

Troparion of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Tone 1:

In thy birth giving O Theotokos, thou didst keep and preserve virginity; and in thy falling asleep thou hast not forsaken the world; for thou wast translated into life, being the Mother of Life. Wherefore by thine intercessions, deliver our souls from death.

Kontakion of Every Sunday in Tone 2:

O protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the Creator most constant, O despise not the suppliant voices of those who have sinned; but be thou quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession, and speed thou to make supplication, thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

Epistle (17th Sunday after Pentecost)

Second Epistle to the Corinthians (6:16-7:1)

Priest: let us attend. Reader: Make your vows to the Lord our God, and perform them! God is known in Judah; His Name is great in Israel!. Priest: Wisdom. Reader: The Reading is from St. Paul’s second Epistle to the Corinthians. Priest: in wisdom let us attend.

Brethren, we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.  Therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”  Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God.

Gospel (17th Sunday of Matthew)

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew (15:21-28)

At that time, Jesus went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a   Canaanite woman from that region came out and cried, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely possessed by a demon.”  But Jesus did not answer her a word.  And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying after us.”  Jesus answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”  But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.”  And Jesus answered, “It is not fair to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”  She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”  Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith!  Be it done for you as you desire.”  And her daughter was healed at that very hour.

St. Valentine in Orthodox Perspective

Who was Saint Valentine? At least 3 men named Valentine were martyred for their faith.

 One man named Valentine died with a group of fellow believers and very little is known.

 The 2nd Valentine was a Bishop beheaded during the persecution of Christians.

 Hieromartyr Valentine’s  relics are in Terni & his feast day is July 30th.

 The 3rd martyr named Valentine was also beheaded and buried near the Bishop.

 St. Valentine the Roman’s relics are in Rome & Dublin & his feast day is July 6th.

So, St. Valentine, were three Holy Men martyred on the Name of the Lord and they were never those “Don Juan” who behave like lovers. They didn’t love women in bodily way as we see in this material world, but they loved every person a spiritual love, knowing that every one is the image of God.

The Orthodox Church is not against the idea itself of having a “love feast”, but it considers that every day and every moment we live should be a feast for love. Our God is the god of love, and love, according to the Bible, is to sacrifice your life for whom you are in love with. This what St. Paul explains in his Epistle to the ephesians that Jesus loved His Church until He died on the Cross. And he reminds all men to love their wives the same how Jesus loves His Church. So are men these days ready to die for their wives according to the Biblical understanding of Love???

In the Ceremony of Marriage, the church chants for the couples about the martyrs who died for their faith and their church. Those martyrs loved their church until the death. So, the church teaches the couples who are coming to get married that they are the martyr of the Lord. The crowns which we put on the heads of couples are the sumbol of the martyrs. Beeing a martyr means you are witnessing the faith in Jesus as resurrected Lord from the dead and your are witnessing until the death. We do not mean you must die if you are in love. We are saying you must be ready for death in any time if you really love a real love. How do we know what is the real love? We go to the Bible and we read what Jesus did to us, and we go to the Epistles of St. Paul to read what is the meaning of the real love. Yes, our Bible is the best reference for those who are in love. Who are in love don’t need a date to celebrate their love, they have the Bible, and who has the Bible celebrate his love every day because every day must witness the Love and the Glory of God. Amen.
